Celebrating 10 Years - St Oscar Romero Shrine - Solemn Vespers on Thursday 28th September at 6pm
Thursday 28 September at 6pm will be the occasion for a special celebration to mark the tenth anniversary of the Shrine installed in St George's Cathedral in honour of St Oscar Romero, the martyred Archbishop of San Salvador.
Solemn Ecumenical Vespers will take place in the cathedral at which Archbishop John Wilson will preside; the emeritus Dean of Westminster Abbey, The Very Rev Dr John Hall, will preach; and all are invited, laity and clergy alike, to the Service and the Reception afterwards in the Amigo Hall.
At the heart of the Shrine stands a huge 3-dimensional cross, designed in El Salvador by the renowned artist, Fernando Llort. Inside the cross, a reliquary contains a precious fragment of the blood-stained alb that Archbishop Romero was wearing at the moment of his martyrdom. Alongside is one of his episcopal skull caps.
Originally a Diocesan Shrine, in this 10th anniversary year, its status has been elevated to that of a National Shrine, with the agreement of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.
Parishes, schools and individual pilgrims from across the country will be most welcome at this sacred space of prayer and veneration. We believe it will be an inspiration for all our work in support of the poor and marginalised of our world, in imitation of our martyred Saint Oscar.
