Bishop Paul Mason

It was announced this week that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Paul to be the next Bishop of the Forces. This post became vacant three years ago when Bishop Richard Moth became Bishop of Arundel & Brighton. Please remember Bishop Paul as he prepares for this new stage in his ministry.

Fr Daniel Weatherley, Sub-Dean

Canon Richard and Fr Paul are delighted that Archbishop Peter has appointed Fr Daniel Weatherley to be the new Sub-Dean.  Many of you will remember that Fr Daniel spent his pastoral year at the cathedral.  Fr Daniel, who is presently in Canterbury, will start on the weekend of 22/23 September and we look forward to welcoming him. 

60th Anniversary

On Saturday 14 July Archbishop Peter will celebrate the 12.30pm Mass to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the reopening of St George’s Cathedral after it was badly damaged during an air raid in 1941. Everyone is invited to attend the Mass.

Help in the Sacristy

Plant Pots

Thank you to those who have generously contributed to replacing the box plants. You will see that we now have very healthy olive trees either side of the west door and in the other large pots.

Requiem Mass

Father Oladele Craig

Last weekend was Fr Ola's last full weekend before he leaves the cathedral to commence his studies in Rome. Our prayers and good wishes go with him as he starts this new stage of his priestly ministry. There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving and a presentation to Fr Ola on Friday 5 October a 6.30pm. More details to follow.

Appointment of new Director of Music

The Dean of St George's Cathedral, Southwark is delighted to announce that Jonathan Schranz has been appointed to be the Cathedral Director of Music with effect from January 2019.
Canon Richard Hearn says, "Jonathan will bring a great deal to the role and I am confident that he will build upon the great work that his predecessor Norman Harper has done both in developing the choir and enhancing the music tradition at St George's Cathedral".

Mass Intentions

The recent GDPR legislation affects some of the things we publish including Mass intention information. From now on Mass intentions will be shown as: “Name RIP”, or “Intentions of Name” or “Private Intention”. No other information will be given.

Waterloo Food Bank & the SVP

It is worrying to see that the use of the Waterloo Food Bank has increased by 38% over the last year. Thank you for your support for the Food Bank via our St Vincent De Paul Group. Please keep donating it is helping a real need in the area. If you know of an individual or family who may need help from the Food Bank the SVP are able to make referrals and issue, in confidence, Food Bank vouchers and they have done so regularly over the past year.  Do you know of anyone or any family who might welcome this support?  Perhaps you are in temporary need yourself?

Young Adults Group

Our Young Adults Group meet every Sunday after 6pm Mass at the Amigo Hall. We are currently exploring the role of young adults in the church ahead of the Synod on Young People that is due to take place in Rome this October.

Secondary School Applications for September 2019

If you have a child who will be starting secondary school in September 2019 please make sure you complete one of the cream coloured forms at the back of the cathedral. The priests will be asked to provide a reference stating that you are a regular member of the congregation so please do two things to help us: 1) Make sure you complete and return one of the forms 2) Make sure  you introduce yourselves to the priests. We will only sign the school reference form if we know you.

A gentle reminder to parents that when they bring their children to Church they are responsible for their safety and welfare. Children should not be wandering about the Cathedral or the Amigo Hall unsupervised.

Director of Music - Norman Harper

Our Director of Music, Norman Harper, will be retiring from his post at the end of the year. Norman has done a tremendous amount to develop the music at St George's for which we are extremely grateful. There will be an opportunity to formally thank Norman towards the end of the year.

Eucharistic Adoration

Usually takes place on Fridays from 8am, until 6pm, and Saturday morning 10am to 12.15pm.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes

The annual Catholic Association pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from 24 to 31 August and be led by Archbishop Peter.  Full details at the back of the cathedral.

St George’s Cathedral Choirs CD

The CD recording produced by our Cathedral Choirs is now available. Entitled: “O Sacrum Convivium - Music for the Mass”, it features our Girls’ Choir, Boys’ Choir, Choral Scholars and Lay Clerks.  It costs £12 per CD.  The CDs are available to buy in the repository after the 10am and 11.30am Masses, where payment is accepted by cash and cheque.  The CDs can also be ordered online using a credit or debit card by clicking here:

Adoremus - Eucharist in the Life of the Church: Liverpool 7-9 September 2018

The bishops of England and Wales will hold a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool on 7-9 September.  The purpose of it is to promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church.  Although only a small number from the diocese will be able to attend it is hoped that many will be involved through preparation and post congress events.  More details are at the back of the cathedral.
